Metals: rich code editing for Scala in VS Code, Vim, Emacs and beyond

Session Recording

About this Session

Rich editor tooling is a golden asset for any programming language, enabling beginners and experts alike to effectively build new applications and navigate existing codebases. Creating bespoke editor tooling is a challenge that that touches on a range of topics including compilers, build tools and user interfaces.

In this talk we present Metals, a Scala language server that supports code completions, type hints, goto definition, fuzzy symbol search and other advanced code editing and navigation capabilities. Metals can be used in VS Code, Vim, Emacs, Atom and Sublime Text as well as any other Language Server Protocol compatible text editor. Metals works with the build tools sbt, Gradle, Maven and Mill thanks to Bloop, a fast Scala build server.

Expect some demos and be prepared to learn a few VS Code tricks.
